Weekend World (2001-02)

And so began the start of my relaunched solo career!

I had written many songs in the last six years, a couple of which – “Nice One” and “Miles Away” – became part of the Idiopathy set. It seemed too much of a shame not to record them, and most of the sessions took place at the weekend, hence “Weekend World” – also the name of a TV programme of my childhood with an iconic theme tune, “Nantucket Sleighride” by the prog group Mountain.

My music was anything but progressive. Listening back to it now there are nods to all sorts of my musical influences – but largely it was very “poppy” and the lyrics sound like amateur student poetry. The hooks were – subconsciously, I hesitate to add – borrowed from a lot of my favourite songs. I wanted to say something profound to the world, but I’m not sure in retrospect what that was. Either way, I had recorded dozens of demos on tape and computer, recording and overdubbing everything time and time again until I had got “my” sound.

The album – “The Burden Of Proof” – never really saw a release, apart from a couple of Youtube uploads. Some of it might even need to carry a health warning, but I was proud of it. It was my own creation and it shows where I was “at” musically. I gave copies out to anyone who expressed an interest.

Then, something very surprising happened. The last thing I was expecting was for anyone to actually like it, let alone invite me to join a band.
